From GAAP to KMAAG: A Practical Guide for Kansas Municipalities Navigating the Accounting/Financial Reporting Model Transition
Tuesday: April 28, 2026 | Wednesday: April 29, 2026
As more Kansas municipalities evaluate the benefits of the Kansas Municipal Audit and Accounting Guide (KMAAG) framework, financial professionals are increasingly faced with the challenge of transitioning from statutorily required Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to a waiver of GAAP under KMAAG-compliant practices. You have to remember that whether you prepare GAAP financial statements or the KMAAG model, you are still required to follow KMAAG for compliance purposes within Kansas statutes. This seminar provides a clear, accessible roadmap for organizations making the shift to the KMAAG model for their financial statement, notes and schedules.
Attendees will gain a comprehensive understanding of the core structural differences between GAAP and KMAAG, with emphasis on the KMAAG reporting framework, required disclosures, fund structure, and audit expectations. The session will walk participants through the rationale behind choosing KMAAG—including reduced reporting burden, simplified statement, and cost-effective audit requirements—while also highlighting the trade‑offs organizations must consider.
Through real‑world examples, attendees will learn how to reframe financial statements, adapt internal controls, and reconfigure chart‑of‑account structures to align with KMAAG reporting standards. The seminar also includes guidance on preparing staff, communicating changes to governing bodies, and ensuring a smooth audit cycle under the new KMAAG framework.
By the end of the session, participants will leave with:
A practical understanding of the fundamental differences between GAAP and KMAAG.
Step‑by‑step considerations for the transition process, including information reporting you will have to gain through other processes contained in internal controls monitoring, anti-fraud framework and internal reconciliations.
Tools and templates for reworking your financial statements into the KMAAG financial statement, notes and schedules.
Tips for avoiding common pitfalls during implementation and audit preparation, including monitoring your budget, providing appropriate reconciliations and making sure you don’t lose key numbers that your staff monitor throughout the year.
Our goal in each of our local governments is to help both the governing body and our citizens understand the annual financial statement and budget. This training opportunity will give you an everyday, common sense approach to simplify our communication relating to your financial statement.
Whether you are contemplating the shift to KMAAG, you are already in the early stages of the KMAAG transition or you have been using KMAAG for several years, this seminar will equip finance leaders with the knowledge, practical steps and confidence to make a successful transition to the KMAAG reporting model.
